I’ve lived abroad and try to practice cultural sensitivity. But it’s incredible these ads bubble up past various levels of review. There seems to be a higher tolerance in Russia for this type of stuff.

Prayer. Meditation. Go for a walk. Have that five minutes to yourself because we carry a lot of weight. I’ve done meditation. I’ve had a therapist, but you have to find the right one.

Suddenly, a Burger King advertisement comes on. It features soccer players, burgers, and an offer to the women of the USA: Get pregnant by a famous soccer star! Get free whoppers! And a cash prize!The pinching gesture with her hand refers to her answer to a question about how much vodka she’d had at the party. The Burger King ad used it to show the short duration of the offer (memes were often mocking her in that pose).The woman on the left is Diana Shurygina, during a talk show appearance. She alleged she’d been raped and beaten at a party. It was big news in Russia. The accused man was convicted and sentenced to eight years (and later reduced to three). As per usual with these cases, there was a ton of victim-shaming and shouting down of her accusations.

The friend that I am talking about is Steve Wozniak, him and Jobs were working at Atari, one of the first video game consoles which revolutionized the video game market. The owner of Atari at the time was its actual founder by the name of Nolan Bushnell. The first game that came out was “Pong,” a classic which many people remember. Due to its high success, Bushnell thought of making a sequel that would be only a single-player and call it “Breakout” in 1975.

The charity event wasn’t a huge fight. I didn’t get a drink thrown in my face with her yelling, “Why don’t you just marry Anna Kooiman since you can’t take your eyes off her!”

For these girls, it will be possible to get the best football genes, and will lay down the success of the Russian national team for several generations ahead. Forward! We believe in you!”

Progress is a slow turning wheel and Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen celebrates the victories and the pain it took to get to where we are in a five-part film anthology called Small Axe, airing now on Amazon Prime. Borrowing a name from a Bob Marley song that speaks of a big tree cut down by the constant chipping of a small axe, the film posits that Britain’s West Indian (Caribbean) community is the axe. White Britain is the tree.

I believe that most people have a dark past, a past that they wish won’t come to light, but sooner or later you have to take that pressure off your chest and come clean. This is what Steve Jobs did about the fact of how he tricked his best friend into working all night long for several days and then cheating him out of his paycheck. This proved to be only the first offense in a long litany of his penchant for pettiness and pointless cruelty.

I suppose the key takeaway in all this: if you are taking your partner into uncharted waters, don’t leave them adrift. Most of us have family members we disagree with, and there will be times where people get put in uncomfortable situations. A relationship is not an election. But it does require tradeoffs.

From a marketing perspective, I still struggle to see how selling out your women to get pregnant has anything to do with hamburgers and getting more people to buy them. Or how doing any sort of rape reference, in any context, will ever have positive ramifications for a brand.

The economics of it don’t even make sense either. Statistically, raising a kid alone doesn’t bode well at the macro level. The cash and the whopper payment certainly won’t make up for the costs of single motherhood.

McQueen’s series masterfully documents systemic oppression and the London community’s stunning resistance during the 1960s and 1980s. McQueen, who has Grenadian roots, takes the audience on a journey through the complex social and political landscape of his hometown but also shares with us the rituals of language, food, music, and dance that made his community’s survival both glorious, and possible. The films release weekly. McQueen talked to Momentum about his ideas behind the anthology and the importance of visiting Black British history and systemic oppression on both sides of the pond.

This is the nature of the world. Sometimes, you find yourself sandwiched between factions, and that’s OK. Honestly, politics isn’t something that should be discussed at family get-togethers anyways. It’s not realistic to expect everyone you love to agree with each other.

But in Moscow, Russia in 2018, in the leadup to the World Cup, this was precisely the commercial that ran. It first appeared on the Facebook account for Burger King Russia:

McQueen: We don’t have to climb Mount Everest. It’s just about being healthy; mentally and spiritually. That’s a victory as far as I’m concerned. Black people, we deal with so many extremes. When we watch TV and see a Black man beaten up or a Black woman dragged across the floor, it affects us even though we try and block it out; it affects our mental health.
